Unfinished JUNNY(c) 2023

Medium: Foam Head Base - African woven textile, Baule Cloth, Kente, ankara caged bird print cowrie shells, beads.

Description: This 11” fabric and foam head is part of a series of sculptures by JUNNY®️ that explore the themes of race, gender, and identity. The head is made from a vibrant patchwork of upcycled fabrics, including African woven textile, Baule Cloth, Kente, ankara caged bird print, cowrie shells, beads.

I am interested in using these heads to represent the different facets of my own identity as a black woman. I am also interested in exploring the ways in which African textiles and symbols can be used to represent strength, power, and beauty.

JUNNY®️ is a multi-hyphenate artist who works in textiles, fiber, and writing. She is known for her fabric and foam heads, which she uses to explore themes of race, gender, and identity. Her work often incorporates repurposed textiles from her work as a fashion designer, as well as materials such as cowrie shells, beading.

JUNNY also writes poems and other written works that accompany her art, inviting her audience to journey with her through her exploration of various art forms, textile repurposing, and race, community, culture, and identity.

Unfinished un·fin·ished/

bare. incomplete. unadorned. undeveloped. unfulfilled.

The expectations

The pressure

The cage you tried to put me in

The way they made you feel

The way they move on to the next best thing

The way they close the door

Slowly / Painfully/ you start to find joy in alone

Simple things/ you smile

Your soul was laid bare!

You were unadorned, incomplete, unfulfilled

You were and are un·fin·ished
